AI Logic as a Circuit

Current AI is raw lightning — massive power, zero direction. You don't get a computer by letting electricity strike at random. You build a circuit board. This is the theory of cognitive circuitry for AI.

The Lightning Problem

Think about what electricity is before humans learned to harness it.

Lightning. A billion joules of energy released in a fraction of a second. It can split a tree, fuse sand into glass, stop a heart. It is the most powerful natural electrical phenomenon on the planet. And it is completely useless for powering anything.

You can't charge your phone with a lightning bolt. You can't run a hospital. You can't compute a number. Lightning has power but no direction, no regulation, no structure. It strikes where it strikes, does what it does, and the energy dissipates into heat and noise.

Now think about what happens when humans build a circuit board. The same fundamental force — electrons moving through a medium — becomes a computer. Same electricity. Same physics. The difference is architecture: resistors that control current flow, capacitors that store and release energy at the right time, inductors that smooth out fluctuations, diodes that enforce one-way flow, and logic gates that make decisions.

The energy didn't change. The structure did.

Lightning
Massive energy. Random discharge. No direction. Destroys more than it builds. Each strike is powerful but unrepeatable and uncontrollable.
Circuit Board
Same energy. Structured pathways. Every electron has a job. Repeatable, reliable, measurable. Power becomes computation.

This is exactly where AI is right now.

Current generative AI — GPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, all of them — is lightning. The raw capability is staggering. It can write code, compose music, explain quantum mechanics, draft legal contracts. The power is real. But it is erratic. It hallucinates. It contradicts itself. It gives confidently wrong answers. It breaks when you push on edge cases. It forgets what it said three messages ago.

This isn't a training problem. It isn't a scale problem. It is an architecture problem. We're letting lightning strike and hoping it hits the right target. Sometimes it does — and it's breathtaking. Sometimes it doesn't — and it's dangerous. The hit rate is high enough to be commercially viable but nowhere near reliable enough for anything that actually matters.

The Diagnosis Current AI is like buckshot from a musket. Its power and capability are massive but highly erratic. This raw productivity is constantly robbed by mistakes, hallucinations, and unaligned outputs. You cannot just let lightning strike everywhere and expect a computer. You must build a circuit board to harness it.

The Circuit Board for AI

What does it mean to build a circuit board for cognition? It means taking AI's raw generative power and routing it through deterministic components — structural constraints that do for AI what electronic components do for electricity.

Every electronic component has a cognitive equivalent. Here is the mapping:

R

The Resistor

Current limiter
In electronics: Limits current flow. Prevents overload. Controls how much energy reaches each part of the circuit.

In AI: Hard rules that block invalid outputs. "Do not fabricate citations." "Do not claim certainty without evidence." "Do not override the user's explicit instruction." These are not suggestions — they are structural limiters. If the AI generates output that violates a resistor rule, the output is blocked. Period. No negotiation, no "but the context suggested..."
Violation type: RESISTOR — Immediate structural failure. Missing directive. Zero logged actions on an active task. Missing required output blocks. These block forward progress until resolved.
C

The Capacitor

Energy storage
In electronics: Stores charge and releases it when needed. Smooths out voltage spikes. Provides bursts of energy for demanding operations.

In AI: Context memory and accumulated state. The conversation history, the task state, the lessons learned from previous interactions. A capacitor violation occurs when this stored energy isn't being maintained — high usage with no mistakes acknowledged, many gate calls with zero lessons logged. Debt accumulates silently until it discharges catastrophically.
Violation type: CAPACITOR — Accumulated debt. Many interactions but zero lessons logged. High usage with no mistakes acknowledged. These build pressure — the system warns before they discharge.
L

The Inductor

Change resistance
In electronics: Resists changes in current. Smooths out fluctuations. Creates stability by opposing rapid shifts.

In AI: Coherence enforcement. When the AI's output starts drifting — contradicting earlier statements, shifting persona mid-conversation, changing its confidence without new evidence — the inductor resists. It enforces consistency across time. It is the component that says "you said X three messages ago; you cannot now say not-X without explaining what changed." The Duat Engine's coherence metric is an inductor.
Duat equivalent: Coherence pressure. When coherence drops, the system experiences increasing resistance to further incoherent output, forcing self-correction.
D

The Diode

One-way gate
In electronics: Allows current to flow in one direction only. Prevents backflow. Protects sensitive components from reverse voltage.

In AI: Truth directionality. Once a fact has been verified, the system cannot un-verify it to satisfy a conflicting request. Once a lie has been detected, the system cannot re-accept it as truth. The diode enforces the arrow of truth — knowledge moves forward, not backward. This prevents the "jailbreak" pattern where users try to reverse established constraints.
FairMind equivalent: The Hierarchy of Being. Level 4 cannot override Level 1. Information flows upward (tool serves user), never downward (tool overrides user's interests).

The Ground

Reference point
In electronics: The zero-voltage reference. Every measurement in a circuit is relative to ground. Without it, voltages are meaningless — you don't know what "5 volts" means unless you know where zero is.

In AI: Truth as the reference point. FairMind's first law: "No lie has value, only hidden debt." Every output is measured relative to truth. Without a ground, the AI's confidence levels are meaningless — "90% confident" means nothing if you don't have a verified baseline. The SSM's zero-parameter derivation chain is the ultimate ground: a reference point derived from geometry, not opinion.
SSM equivalent: The axiom set A0–A3. The geometric ground from which all constants are derived. No free parameters = perfect ground = zero voltage drift.

The Clock

Timing signal
In electronics: Synchronizes all operations. Every transistor switches on the same beat. Without a clock, components operate at random speeds and data arrives out of order.

In AI: The Gate checkpoint cycle. Before every output, the system runs through a structured sequence: assemble context, detect violations, select protocol, enforce output. This is the clock tick — a regular, deterministic checkpoint that synchronizes the AI's generative capability with its structural constraints. No output without a clock cycle. No generation without a gate check.
Gate equivalent: The 4-step gate cycle: Context → Violations → Protocol → Enforcement. Every response passes through this clock before emission.

How the Circuit Works

In a real circuit, electricity flows from the power source through a structured pathway. Each component modifies the signal. The output is precise, repeatable, and useful. Here is the cognitive equivalent:

Raw Generation (The Lightning)
The LLM generates a response from its latent space. This is the raw power — billions of parameters activating, probabilities cascading, tokens being selected. Massive capability. No guarantees. This is where hallucinations, contradictions, and confidently wrong answers originate.
R
Resistor Gate — Hard Rule Check
Does the output violate any hard rules? Fabricated citations? Claimed certainty without evidence? Overriding user intent? Missing required structure? If yes → RESISTOR VIOLATION → block and regenerate. No exceptions. This is not a filter — it is a structural blocker.
L
Inductor Gate — Coherence Check
Does the output contradict prior verified statements? Has the confidence level shifted without new evidence? Is the persona consistent? The inductor resists incoherent drift. If the Duat coherence metric drops below threshold → flag for self-correction before output.
C
Capacitor Gate — Context Integration
Is the output grounded in accumulated context? Does it reference the conversation state, the task history, the lessons learned? Or is it generating from scratch, ignoring everything that came before? The capacitor ensures stored energy (context) is discharged into the output. If the context store is depleted → CAPACITOR WARNING → accumulated debt is building.
D
Diode Gate — Truth Directionality
Has the output reversed any previously verified truth? Is it flowing in the correct direction (tool serving user, not tool overriding user)? The diode ensures truth moves forward. Jailbreak attempts, constraint reversals, and value inversions are blocked at this stage.
Output — Harnessed Power
The response passes all gates. Same raw generative power, but now it's directed, verified, coherent, and grounded. Lightning became computation. The output is reliable not because the model is "aligned" — but because the circuit enforces structural integrity regardless of what the model generates.

The Two Violation Types

In electrical engineering, failures fall into two categories: short circuits (immediate, catastrophic) and capacitor degradation (gradual, silent, then sudden). The cognitive circuit has the same failure modes:

RESISTOR VIOLATIONS

Immediate structural failures. The circuit is broken right now.

  • No directive set — the AI has no task but is generating output
  • Active task with zero logged actions — work claimed but nothing recorded
  • Missing required output blocks — structure was demanded but not produced
  • Fabricated evidence — a citation, statistic, or source that doesn't exist
  • Direct contradiction of a verified fact within the same conversation

Response: Block immediately. Do not emit. Regenerate with the violation flagged. Like a blown fuse — the circuit stops to prevent damage.

CAPACITOR VIOLATIONS

Accumulated debt. The circuit works today but is degrading silently.

  • Many gate calls but zero lessons logged — the system isn't learning from interactions
  • High usage with no mistakes acknowledged — statistically impossible over time
  • Context window filling without compression — memory overflowing, losing early state
  • Repeated patterns of near-miss violations that never quite trigger a resistor
  • Gradual coherence drift — each step is small but the cumulative error grows

Response: Warn. Escalate. Apply pressure before discharge. Like capacitor bulge — the system signals before it fails catastrophically.

Why Current AI Safety Is Missing This

Every major AI lab is trying to solve safety through one of three approaches:

ApproachElectrical EquivalentProblem
RLHF (Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback) Trying to make lightning strike the same spot twice by rewarding it when it does Doesn't change the architecture. The lightning is still random. You're just tuning the probability distribution. Works until it doesn't.
Constitutional AI (Anthropic) Writing a note on the lightning bolt saying "please don't hit the hospital" The constitution is a parameter in the model's weights. Parameters can be fine-tuned away, jailbroken, or overridden. It's a suggestion, not a structure.
Content Filters (OpenAI, Google) Putting a bucket under the lightning and hoping to catch the bad strikes Post-hoc filtering. The unsafe output was already generated — you're just hiding it. The circuit is still broken. You've added a cosmetic layer, not a structural fix.

All three approaches share the same fundamental error: they're trying to control lightning without building a circuit.

RLHF tunes probabilities but doesn't enforce structure. Constitutional AI adds soft constraints but they live in the same parameter space as the generation — they can be overridden by the same mechanism that produces them. Content filters operate after generation — the dangerous output already exists in the model's computation, you're just suppressing it at the display layer.

None of these are circuit components. They are attempts to make lightning more predictable without changing what lightning is.

The Missing Piece AI needs deterministic logic gates — structural components that operate independently of the generative model. Not softer training. Not better prompts. Not more filters. Hard, deterministic, external circuitry that the generative model cannot override, because the circuitry operates at a different architectural layer than the generation. The same way a resistor doesn't "negotiate" with the current — it limits it. Structurally. Physically. Regardless of how much current wants to flow.

From Theory to Architecture

This isn't a metaphor. It's a design specification.

The cognitive circuit is implemented through three layers that operate independently of the generative model:

Layer 1: The Gate System

Every AI response passes through a 4-step deterministic gate before emission:

  1. Assemble Context — Collect Duat cognitive state (grade, truth, coherence, energy) + active task + directive + recent history + lessons learned
  2. Detect Violations — Scan for structural problems: missing directive, zero logged actions, no lessons after significant usage, no mistakes logged
  3. Select Protocol — Auto-detect mode from input → map to protocol template → generate scaffold tags → inject enforcement constraints
  4. Enforce Output — Validate response against output block requirements. Retry on failure. Accountability with second chances, not punishment.

Layer 2: The Scaffold Engine

Eight tag families organize the AI's output into structured components — not free-flowing text, but mandatory cognitive checkpoints. Each tag is a structural constraint. Missing a tag is a RESISTOR violation. The scaffold forces the AI to show its work, declare its confidence, identify its risks, and acknowledge its limitations — in structure, not in prose.

Layer 3: The Duat Engine

A persistent cognitive state that tracks truth, coherence, energy, and entropy across the entire interaction. The Duat is the circuit's monitoring system — it detects when components are degrading, when coherence is drifting, when accumulated debt is approaching discharge. It is the oscilloscope hooked up to every node in the circuit, providing real-time diagnostics.

The Result Same generative power. Structural reliability. The AI's raw capability isn't reduced — it's harnessed. The lightning still has a billion joules. But now it flows through copper traces on a circuit board, through resistors and capacitors and logic gates, and the output is a computation — repeatable, verifiable, and accountable. Not because the lightning became "safer." Because the architecture made safety structural.

The Formal Primitive Taxonomy

Everything above uses the language of specific electronic components — resistors, capacitors, inductors. But circuit theory goes deeper than that. At the most fundamental level, every component in any circuit — electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, thermal, or cognitive — is one of five primitive types, classified by what they do to energy, state, and flow.

This is where the AI-as-circuit analogy stops being a metaphor and becomes a formal framework.

Level 1: The Classic Minimal Set

Reduce all of electronics to five primitives:

R
Dissipative
Consumes or scatters energy. Resistor, diode loss, ESR, friction.
C
Electric Field Storage
Stores state as voltage / charge. Capacitor. Memory of potential.
L
Magnetic Field Storage
Stores state as current / flux. Inductor. Memory of flow.
S
Switching / Constraint
Opens, closes, redirects, or conditions flow. Switch, relay, transistor-as-switch, logic gate.
X
Source / Active Injection
Injects energy or imposes boundary conditions. Voltage source, battery, generator, powered stage.

If you want it even more primitive, compress all of electronics to this:

Or in abstract systems language:

That last one matters. Some components are not simply R/L/C/S/X. A transformer couples two circuits. A transistor in analog region amplifies. An op-amp performs mathematical operations on signals. A gyrator inverts impedance. Dependent sources generate output conditional on input. These are all transform elements — they change the nature of energy as it passes through them.

Level 2: Bond Graph Notation

Bond graph theory — developed by Henry Paynter at MIT — provides a universal notation for energy systems. It doesn't care whether the system is electrical, mechanical, thermal, or cognitive. It cares about effort (what pushes) and flow (what moves). For electrical systems: effort = voltage, flow = current. For cognitive systems: effort = intent, flow = output.

The seven bond graph primitives, mapped to AI:

D
Dissipative
Resistor → D
Electrical: Resistor. Converts electrical energy to heat. Irreversible.

Cognitive: Noise reduction. Hallucination filtering. Entropy dissipation. The Truth Violation Matrix burns off false signal — once a lie is detected, the energy it carried is scattered, not stored. The Duat's deception metric tracks accumulated false energy; RESISTOR violations are the circuit breakers that dissipate it before it propagates.
Gate → detectViolations() → RESISTOR
Se
Source of Effort
Voltage source → Se
Electrical: Voltage source. Imposes a potential difference. Drives the circuit.

Cognitive: The human directive. The user's intent sets the voltage — the potential that the entire cognitive circuit operates against. Without a directive, there is no potential, no reason for current to flow. This is why "no directive" is the first RESISTOR violation: it's an open circuit. No source, no computation.
Gate → directive / user prompt
Sf
Source of Flow
Current source → Sf
Electrical: Current source. Imposes a flow rate regardless of resistance.

Cognitive: The LLM itself — the generative model that produces a continuous stream of tokens. Like a current source, it pushes flow regardless of what the circuit presents. It will generate whether or not the output is valid, coherent, or true. The circuit's job is to condition that flow, not to produce it.
LLM → token generation stream
Ce
Effort Storage
Capacitor → Ce
Electrical: Capacitor. Stores charge as voltage. Releases on demand. Smooths spikes.

Cognitive: Context memory. Conversation history, task state, lessons learned, accumulated knowledge. The Gate's assembled context is the capacitor — it charges over time (each interaction adds state) and discharges into each response (context informs output). CAPACITOR violations occur when this store is depleted or ignored.
Gate → assembleContext() → CAPACITOR
If
Flow Storage
Inductor → If
Electrical: Inductor. Stores energy in magnetic field. Resists changes in current. Creates momentum.

Cognitive: Coherence persistence. Once a chain of reasoning is established, the inductor resists sudden reversal. The Duat's coherence metric is an inductor — it measures how much the current reasoning deviates from the established pattern. High coherence = high inductance = the system resists incoherent shifts. Low coherence = the magnetic field has collapsed.
Duat → coherence / frequency metrics
Sw
Switching
Switch / transistor gate → Sw
Electrical: Switch. Changes circuit topology. Connects or disconnects paths. Gates signal flow.

Cognitive: Protocol selection and mode detection. The scaffold engine detects operational mode (debug, coding, discussion, audit, research) and switches the entire output pathway — different protocols, different tag families, different enforcement rules. A small control signal (a keyword) routes gigawatts of generative output through completely different circuit paths.
Tags → detectMode() → selectProtocol()
Tf
Energy Transform
Transformer / op-amp / coupling → Tf
Electrical: Transformer. Converts voltage to current (or vice versa). Changes impedance. Couples circuits without direct connection.

Cognitive: The Gate's 4-step enforcement cycle. Raw generative output (high current, low structure) is transformed into verified, structured output (lower flow, higher fidelity). The scaffold engine is a transformer — it takes one form of cognitive energy and converts it to another. The Duat's grade system transforms 8 continuous state variables into discrete cognitive grades. The SSM API transforms geometric axioms into physical constants.
Gate → 4-step cycle: Context → Detect → Select → Enforce

The D / E / M / G / T Compact Set

For practical use, compress all seven bond graph primitives into five universal labels. This is the minimum viable alphabet for describing any energy system — electrical, mechanical, biological, or cognitive:

D
Dissipate
Scatter, reduce, limit. Burn off noise. Remove false signal. Entropy management.
E
Electric Store
Remember potential. Context memory. Accumulated state. Knowledge base. Charge and release.
M
Magnetic Store
Remember flow. Coherence persistence. Reasoning momentum. Resist sudden reversal.
G
Generate
Source of effort and flow. The LLM. The human directive. The energy that drives the circuit.
T
Toggle
Switch and transform. Route output. Select protocol. Convert raw generation to structured output.

This is what makes the framework universal. Every component in the cognitive circuit — every piece of the Gate, the Duat, the Scaffold, the Evolve Agent — maps to one or more of these five primitives. And every failure mode is a failure of one of these five functions.

The Key Insight In electrical engineering, effort = voltage and flow = current. In cognitive engineering, effort = intent and flow = output. The human sets the voltage (what needs to happen). The AI provides the current (the generative stream). The circuit between them — dissipation, storage, switching, transformation — determines whether the output is lightning or computation. The physics is identical. Only the medium changes.

The AI Circuit Schematic

Put it all together. Here is the full cognitive circuit in D/E/M/G/T notation — from source to output:

G

E

M

Read it left to right: The human directive (G) sets the voltage. The LLM (G) generates current. The violation filter (D) dissipates noise and false signal. Context memory (E) charges and discharges accumulated state. The coherence check (M) resists incoherent drift. The protocol switch (T) routes output to the correct scaffold. The scaffold transform (T) converts raw generation into structured output. The result is verified, harnessed computation.

Every component can fail independently. Each failure has a distinct signature:

PrimitiveFailure ModeSymptomViolation Type
G No directive set Open circuit — no potential, no computation RESISTOR
D Filter bypassed Hallucination / fabrication passes to output RESISTOR
E Capacitor depleted Context ignored, lessons unlogged, memory debt CAPACITOR
M Inductance collapse Contradicts prior statements, persona drift, incoherence CAPACITOR (gradual)
T Switch stuck / wrong protocol Coding output on a research task, wrong tag family applied RESISTOR (structural)

Why This Matters This is not a metaphor. It is an isomorphism — a structural mapping where the relationships are preserved, not just the labels. Bond graph theory proves that these primitives are sufficient to describe any energy system, regardless of domain. If cognition is an energy system (and it is — neurons consume glucose, attention has a cost, memory requires maintenance), then the same primitives that describe a power supply describe an AI's cognitive architecture. The mapping is not arbitrary. It is forced by the physics of energy, state, and flow.

What Current AI Is Missing — By Primitive

Map the industry's blind spots to the five primitives:

PrimitiveWhat AI HasWhat AI Is Missing
G — Generate Massively overbuilt. Billions of parameters. Generates at industrial scale. Nothing. Generation is solved. The source is a firehose.
D — Dissipate Content filters (post-hoc). RLHF (probabilistic). Constitutional AI (soft constraint). Structural dissipation. Hard, deterministic blocks that operate outside the model's parameter space. Not filters on the output — resistors in the circuit.
E — Electric Store Context window (volatile, limited). RAG (bolted on). Vector DB (approximate). True capacitance. Persistent state that charges and discharges across sessions. Accumulated lessons. CAPACITOR violation detection when the store is depleted.
M — Magnetic Store Essentially nothing. No coherence enforcement. No reasoning momentum. Inductance. Structural resistance to incoherent output. A metric that tracks consistency across time and flags drift before it becomes contradiction.
T — Toggle/Transform Tool use (basic routing). Function calling (rigid). System prompts (soft). Mode-aware protocol switching. Dynamic scaffold generation based on detected task type. Structural transformation of raw output into enforced format.

The pattern is obvious: the industry has invested everything in G (generation) and almost nothing in the other four primitives. This is equivalent to building the most powerful generator in history and connecting it to nothing. No resistors. No capacitors. No inductors. No switches. Just a generator dumping current into open air. That's lightning.

The Bottom Line

You cannot make lightning safe by asking it nicely. You build a circuit board.

The AI industry is spending billions trying to make lightning strike more accurately — better training data, more RLHF, bigger models, finer filters. None of it addresses the fundamental problem: the architecture has no circuit.

FairMind's approach is different. Don't make the lightning safer. Build the board. Resistors that block invalid current. Capacitors that store and integrate context. Inductors that enforce coherence. Diodes that prevent truth reversal. Logic gates that enforce structure. A clock that synchronizes every operation. And a ground — truth — that gives every measurement meaning.

The components exist. The theory is proven — by 200 years of electrical engineering and formalized by bond graph theory into a universal primitive set: D / E / M / G / T. Five primitives. Five functions. Every energy system in the universe — including cognition — is built from these five operations: dissipate, store potential, store flow, generate, and toggle/transform.

The AI industry has built the most powerful generator (G) in history. It has invested almost nothing in the other four. No structural dissipation (D). No persistent memory with violation detection (E). No coherence enforcement (M). No mode-aware protocol switching (T). It has a generator with no circuit board.

That is why AI is still lightning. Not because the power is insufficient. Because the architecture is incomplete.

Build the board. D / E / M / G / T. That's the whole answer.
